 Introduction

Arjuna is now taught by Lord Kṛṣṇa about the glorious expansions...

Important: All that is in brackets and italicized within the translation has been added by me in order to complete the sense of a particular phrase or sentence. In turn, all that is between double hyphen (--...--) constitutes clarifying further information also added by me. In addition, note that I will use quotation marks to delimit text only when the person speaking is not Sañjaya himself (the narrator). Therefore, the words spoken by Sañjaya will not be delimited by quotation marks.

 Chapter 10: Vibhūtiyoga (The Yoga of the glorious expansions)

श्रीभगवानुवाच
भूय एव महाबाहो शृणु मे परमं वचः।
यत्तेऽहं प्रीयमाणाय वक्ष्यामि हितकाम्यया॥१॥

Śrībhagavānuvāca
Bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ|
Yatte'haṁ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā||1||

The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):

"O great-armed one (mahā-bāho), hear (śṛṇu) again (bhūyas eva) My (me) supreme words (paramam vacaḥ) which (yad) I (aham), wishing you well (te... hita-kāmyayā), will speak to you who (already) are delighting (te... prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi)"||1||


न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः।
अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः॥२॥

Na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṁ na maharṣayaḥ|
Ahamādirhi devānāṁ maharṣīṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ||2||

"Neither (na) the hosts of gods (sura-gaṇāḥ) nor (na) the great seers (mahā-ṛṣayaḥ) knew (viduḥ) My (me) origin (prabhavam), because (hi) I (aham), in every way (sarvaśas), (am) the First (ādiḥ) of the gods (devānām) and (ca) of the great seers (mahā-ṛṣīṇām)"||2||


यो मामजमनादिं च वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम्।
असंमूढः स मर्त्येषु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते॥३॥

Yo māmajamanādiṁ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram|
Asaṁmūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate||3||

"He who (yaḥ) knows Me (mām... vetti), the Great Lord of the world (loka-mahā-īśvaram), (as) Unborn (ajam) and (ca) Beginningless (anādim), he (saḥ) —who, among mortals, is neither deluded nor confused (asaṁmūḍhaḥ... martyeṣu)— is freed (pramucyate) from all sins (sarva-pāpaiḥ)"||3||


बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसंमोहः क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः।
सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो भयं चाभयमेव च॥४॥

Buddhirjñānamasaṁmohaḥ kṣamā satyaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ|
Sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṁ cābhayameva ca||4||

"Intelligence (buddhiḥ), knowledge (jñānam), absence of delusion and confusion (asaṁmohaḥ), patience (kṣamā), truthfulness (satyam), self-control (damaḥ), tranquility (śamaḥ), pleasure (sukham), pain (duḥkham), existence --this word also means 'Saṁsāra', though not in this context-- (bhavaḥ), non-existence (abhāvaḥ), fear (bhayam), and (ca... eva ca) absence of fear (abhayam)"||4||


अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः।
भवन्ति भावा भूतानां मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः॥५॥

Ahiṁsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṁ yaśo'yaśaḥ|
Bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṁ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ||5||

"Non-violence (ahiṁsā), equanimity (samatā), satisfaction/contentment (tuṣṭiḥ), austerity (tapas), charity (dānam), fame (yaśas) (and) absence of fame (ayaśas)... (these) various (pṛthagvidhāḥ) states (bhāvāḥ) of beings (bhūtānām) arise (bhavanti) from Me alone (mattas eva)"||5||


महर्षयः सप्त पूर्वे चत्वारो मनवस्तथा।
मद्भावा मानसा जाता येषां लोक इमाः प्रजाः॥६॥

Maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā|
Madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṁ loka imāḥ prajāḥ||6||

"The seven (sapta) great seers (mahā-ṛṣayaḥ) of yore (pūrve), as well as (tathā) the four (catvāraḥ) Manus (manavaḥ), are My essence or nature (mad-bhāvāḥ), they have been engendered (jātāḥ) mentally --that is, 'by My own Mind'-- (mānasāḥ), (and) these (imāḥ) living beings (prajāḥ) in the world (loke) belong to them --lit. 'of which', in other words, 'all living beings proceed from them'-- (yeṣām)"||6||


एतां विभूतिं योगं च मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः।
सोऽविकम्पेन योगेन युज्यते नात्र संशयः॥७॥

Etāṁ vibhūtiṁ yogaṁ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ|
So'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṁśayaḥ||7||

"He (saḥ) who (yaḥ) truly (tattvatas) knows (vetti) this (etām) glorious expansion (vibhūtim) and (ca) Yoga (yogam) of Mine (mama) is endowed (yujyate) with a stable and firm Yoga (avikampena yogena), of this (atra) there is no doubt (na... saṁśayaḥ)"||7||


अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते।
इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां बुधा भावसमन्विताः॥८॥

Ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate|
Iti matvā bhajante māṁ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ||8||

"I (aham) (am) the Origin (prabhavaḥ) of everything (sarvasya); everything (sarvam) arises (pravartate) from Me (mattas). Thinking (matvā) thus (iti), the wise (budhāḥ), endowed with feeling/disposition/intention (bhāva-samanvitāḥ), worship Me (bhajante mām)"||8||


 मच्चित्ता मद्गतप्राणा बोधयन्तः परस्परम्।
कथयन्तश्च मां नित्यं तुष्यन्ति च रमन्ति च॥९॥

Maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam|
Kathayantaśca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca||9||

"With (their) minds (focused) on Me (mad-cittāḥ), with (their) lives situated in Me (mad-gata-prāṇāḥ), they become satisfied (tuṣyanti) and (ca... ca) rejoice (ramanti), awakening (bodhayantaḥ) one another (parasparam) and (ca) speaking (kathayantaḥ) always (nityam) about Me (mām)"||9||


तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम्।
ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते॥१०॥

Teṣāṁ satatayuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prītipūrvakam|
Dadāmi buddhiyogaṁ taṁ yena māmupayānti te||10||

"To those who are constantly dedicated (to Me, and) worship (Me) (teṣām satata-yuktānām bhajatām) with affection and love (prīti-pūrvakam), I give (dadāmi) that Yoga of intelligence (buddhi-yogam tam), by which (yena) they (te) come (upayānti) to Me (mām)"||10||


तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः।
नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता॥११॥

Teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṁ tamaḥ|
Nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā||11||

"Out of compassion (anukampa-artham) for them (teṣām eva), I (aham), abiding in their own hearts (ātma-bhāva-sthaḥ), eliminate (nāśayāmi) the darkness (tamas) born of ignorance (ajñāna-jam) with the luminous lamp of knowledge (jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā)"||11||


अर्जुन उवाच
परं ब्रह्म परं धाम पवित्रं परमं भवान्।
पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यमादिदेवमजं विभुम्॥१२॥

Arjuna uvāca
Paraṁ brahma paraṁ dhāma pavitraṁ paramaṁ bhavān|
Puruṣaṁ śāśvataṁ divyamādidevamajaṁ vibhum||12||

Arjuna (arjunaḥ) said (uvāca):

"You (bhavān) (are) the Supreme (param) Brahma (brahma), the Supreme (param) Abode (dhāma), the Supreme (paramam) Purifier (pavitram), the Eternal (śāśvatam) (and) Divine (divyam) Person (puruṣam), the Primordial God (ādi-devam), the Unborn (ajam), the Omnipresent (vibhum)"||12||


आहुस्त्वामृषयः सर्वे देवर्षिर्नारदस्तथा।
असितो देवलो व्यासः स्वयं चैव ब्रवीषि मे॥१३॥

Āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā|
Asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṁ caiva bravīṣi me||13||

"All (sarve) the seers (ṛṣayaḥ) call and consider You (thus) (āhuḥ tvām), just as (tathā) the divine seer (deva--ṛṣiḥ) Nārada (nāradaḥ), (and also) Asita (asitaḥ), Devala (devalaḥ), (and) Vyāsa (vyāsaḥ); and (ca eva) You Yourself (svayam) tell me (bravīṣi me) (that)"||13||


सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव।
न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः॥१४॥

Sarvametadṛtaṁ manye yanmāṁ vadasi keśava|
Na hi te bhagavanvyaktiṁ vidurdevā na dānavāḥ||14||

"O long-haired One (keśava)!, I consider (manye) as true (ṛtam) all (sarvam) this (etad) that (yad) You tell me (mām vadasi). O Lord (bhagavan)!, neither (na hi) the gods (devāḥ) nor (na) the demons (dānavāḥ) knew (viduḥ) Your (te) Manifestation (vyaktim)"||14||


स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम।
भूतभावन भूतेश देवदेव जगत्पते॥१५॥

Svayamevātmanātmānaṁ vettha tvaṁ puruṣottama|
Bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate||15||

"O You, the Best of men (puruṣa-uttama), Creator of beings --or «Promoter of the welfare of beings»-- (bhūta-bhāvana), Lord of beings (bhūta-īśa), God of gods (deva-deva), (and) Lord of the world (jagat-pate)!, You (tvam) Yourself (svayam eva) knew Yourself (ātmānam vettha) through Yourself (ātmanā)"||15||


वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः।
याभिर्विभूतिभिर्लोकानिमांस्त्वं व्याप्य तिष्ठसि॥१६॥

Vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ|
Yābhirvibhūtibhirlokānimāṁstvaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi||16||

"Please, speak (vaktum arhasi) completely (aśeṣeṇa) about Your divine and glorious expansions (divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ), by which --by the glorious expansions-- (yābhiḥ vibhūtibhiḥ) You (tvam) continue to pervade (vyāpya tiṣṭhasi) these worlds (lokān imān)"||16||


 कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन्।
केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया॥१७॥

Kathaṁ vidyāmahaṁ yogiṁstvāṁ sadā paricintayan|
Keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā||17||

"O Yogī (yogin)!, how (katham), thinking (paricintayan) always (sadā) of You (tvām), could I know You (vidyām aham... tvām)? And (ca), O Lord (bhagavan), in which bhāva-s --various meanings for this word: "in which objects, states, feelings, mental conditions, etc.?"-- (keṣu keṣu... bhāveṣu) am I to think of You (cintyaḥ asi... mayā)?"||17||


विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं विभूतिं च जनार्दन।
भूयः कथय तृप्तिर्हि शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम्॥१८॥

Vistareṇātmano yogaṁ vibhūtiṁ ca janārdana|
Bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam||18||

"O You who agitate men (jana-ardana)!, speak (kathaya) again (bhūyas), and in great detail (vistareṇa), about Your Yoga and Your glorious expansion (ātmanaḥ yogam vibhūtim ca), because (hi) for me, who listens to (śṛṇvataḥ... me) the Nectar (of Your words) (amṛtam), there is (never) (na asti) satisfaction (tṛptiḥ)"||18||


श्रीभगवानुवाच
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः।
प्राधान्यतः कुरुश्रेष्ठ नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे॥१९॥

Śrībhagavānuvāca
Hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ|
Prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me||19||

The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):

"Behold (hanta)!, O you, the best of the Kuru-s (kuru-śreṣṭha)!, I shall speak to you (te kathayiṣyāmi) about My principal --lit. «principally»-- glorious (and) divine expansions (divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ... prādhānyatas), (for) there is no (na asti) end (antaḥ) to My vastness (vistarasya me)"||19||


अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः।
अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च॥२०॥

Ahamātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ|
Ahamādiśca madhyaṁ ca bhūtānāmanta eva ca||20||

"O thick-haired one (guḍā-keśa), I (aham) (am) the Self (ātmā) that dwells in the hearts of all beings (sarva-bhūta-āśaya-sthitaḥ); I (aham) (am) the beginning (ādiḥ), the middle (madhyam), and (ca... ca... ca) the very end (antaḥ eva) of beings (bhūtānām)"||20||


आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान्।
मरीचिर्मरुतामस्मि नक्षत्राणामहं शशी॥२१॥

Ādityānāmahaṁ viṣṇurjyotiṣāṁ raviraṁśumān|
Marīcirmarutāmasmi nakṣatrāṇāmahaṁ śaśī||21||

"Of the Āditya-s (ādityānām) I (aham) (am) Viṣṇu (viṣṇuḥ), of the lights (jyotiṣām) the radiant (aṁśumān) sun (raviḥ), of the Marut-s (marutām) I am (asmi) Marīci (marīciḥ), (and) of the stars (nakṣatrāṇām) I (am) (aham) the moon (śaśī)"||21||


वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासवः।
इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना॥२२॥

Vedānāṁ sāmavedo'smi devānāmasmi vāsavaḥ|
Indriyāṇāṁ manaścāsmi bhūtānāmasmi cetanā||22||

"Of the Veda-s (vedānām) I am (asmi) the Sāmaveda (sāma-vedaḥ), of the gods (devānām) I am (asmi) Vāsava --an epithet of the god Indra as chief of the Vasu-s-- (vāsavaḥ), of the indriya-s --lit. powers-- (indriyāṇām) I am (asmi) the mind (manas ca), (and) of beings (bhūtānām) I am (asmi) consciousness/intelligence (cetanā)"||22||


रुद्राणां शङ्करश्चास्मि वित्तेशो यक्षरक्षसाम्।
वसूनां पावकश्चास्मि मेरुः शिखरिणामहम्॥२३॥

Rudrāṇāṁ śaṅkaraścāsmi vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām|
Vasūnāṁ pāvakaścāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇāmaham||23||

"And (ca) of the Rudra-s (rudrāṇām) I am (asmi) Śaṅkara (śaṅkaraḥ), of the Yakṣa-s and Rakṣas-s (yakṣa-rakṣasām) Vitteśa --the lord of wealth, an epithet of Kubera-- (vitteśaḥ), of the Vasu-s (vasūnām) I am (asmi) Pāvaka --that is, Agni, the Fire-- (pāvakaḥ ca), (and) of the mountains (śikhariṇām) I (am) (aham) Meru (meruḥ)"||23||


पुरोधसां च मुख्यं मां विद्धि पार्थ बृहस्पतिम्।
सेनानीनामहं स्कन्दः सरसामस्मि सागरः॥२४॥

Purodhasāṁ ca mukhyaṁ māṁ viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim|
Senānīnāmahaṁ skandaḥ sarasāmasmi sāgaraḥ||24||

"And (ca) of the family priests (purodhasām), O son of Pṛthā (pārtha), know me (mām viddhi) as Bṛhaspati (bṛhaspatim), the main (priest) (mukhyam). Of the army leaders (senānīnām) I (am) (aham) Skanda --that is, Kārtikeya-- (skandaḥ), (and) of the great sheets of water (sarasām) I am (asmi) the ocean (sāgaraḥ)"||24||


 महर्षीणां भृगुरहं गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम्।
यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि स्थावराणां हिमालयः॥२५॥

Maharṣīṇāṁ bhṛgurahaṁ girāmasmyekamakṣaram|
Yajñānāṁ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṁ himālayaḥ||25||

"Of the great seers (mahā-ṛṣīṇām) I (am) (aham) Bhṛgu (bhṛguḥ), of words --also «of invocations»-- (girām) I am (asmi) a single syllable --it refers to Aum̐-- (ekam akṣaram), of sacrifices (yajñānām) I am (asmi) the sacrifice of japa (japa-yajñaḥ), (and) of immovable and inanimate things (sthāvarāṇām) (I am) the Himalaya (himālayaḥ)"||25||


अश्वत्थः सर्ववृक्षाणां देवर्षीणां च नारदः।
गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथः सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनिः॥२६॥

Aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṁ devarṣīṇāṁ ca nāradaḥ|
Gandharvāṇāṁ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṁ kapilo muniḥ||26||

"Of all trees (sarva-vṛkṣāṇām), (I am) Aśvattha --the sacred fig tree whose scientific name is Ficus Religiosa-- (aśvatthaḥ), and (ca) of the divine seers (deva-ṛṣīṇām) Nārada (nāradaḥ). Of the celestial musicians (gandharvāṇām) (I am) Citraratha (citrarathaḥ), (and) of the Siddha-s or Perfected Ones (siddhānām) the sage (muniḥ) Kapila (kapilaḥ)"||26||


उच्चैःश्रवसमश्वानां विद्धि माममृतोद्भवम्।
ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणां नराणां च नराधिपम्॥२७॥

Uccaiḥśravasamaśvānāṁ viddhi māmamṛtodbhavam|
Airāvataṁ gajendrāṇāṁ narāṇāṁ ca narādhipam||27||

"Of horses (aśvānām) know me (viddhi mām) as Uccaiḥśravasa (uccaiḥśravasam) —sprung from Nectar (amṛta-udbhavam)—, of lordly elephants (gajendrāṇām) (know me as) Airāvata (airāvatam), and (ca) of men (narāṇām) (know me as) the king (narādhipam)"||27||


आयुधानामहं वज्रं धेनूनामस्मि कामधुक्।
प्रजनश्चास्मि कन्दर्पः सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकिः॥२८॥

Āyudhānāmahaṁ vajraṁ dhenūnāmasmi kāmadhuk|
Prajanaścāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇāmasmi vāsukiḥ||28||

"Of weapons (āyudhānām) I (am) (aham) the thunderbolt (vajram), of cows (dhenūnām) I am (asmi) the cow of plenty (kāma-dhuk), and (ca) I am (asmi) the progenitor (prajanaḥ) Kandarpa --the god of love-- (kandarpaḥ), (and) of serpents (sarpāṇām) I am (asmi) Vāsuki (vāsukiḥ)"||28||


अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम्।
पितॄणामर्यमा चास्मि यमः संयमतामहम्॥२९॥

Anantaścāsmi nāgānāṁ varuṇo yādasāmaham|
Pitṝṇāmaryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saṁyamatāmaham||29||

"Of the nāga-s --of the serpent demons-- (nāgānām) I am (asmi) Ananta (ananta caḥ), of those who dwell in water --lit. of aquatic animals-- (yādasām) I (am) (aham) Varuṇa (varuṇaḥ), of the ancestors (pitṝṇām) I am (asmi) Aryamā (aryamā ca), (and) of those who uphold law and order (saṁyamatām) I (am) (aham) Yama (yamaḥ)"||29||


प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां कालः कलयतामहम्।
मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च पक्षिणाम्॥३०॥

Prahlādaścāsmi daityānāṁ kālaḥ kalayatāmaham|
Mṛgāṇāṁ ca mṛgendro'haṁ vainateyaśca pakṣiṇām||30||

"Of the demons (daityānām) I am (asmi) Prahlāda (prahlādaḥ ca), of those who count and calculate (kalayatām) I (am) (aham) time (kālaḥ), of beasts (mṛgāṇām ca) I (am) (aham) the lion (mṛga-indraḥ), and (ca) of birds (pakṣiṇām) Vainateya --that is, Garuḍa-- (vainateyaḥ)"||30||


पवनः पवतामस्मि रामः शस्त्रभृतामहम्।
झषाणां मकरश्चास्मि स्रोतसामस्मि जाह्नवी॥३१॥

Pavanaḥ pavatāmasmi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāmaham|
Jhaṣāṇāṁ makaraścāsmi srotasāmasmi jāhnavī||31||

"Of purifiers (pavatām) I am (asmi) the wind --or the wind god-- (pavanaḥ), of those who bear weapons --that is, warriors-- (śastra-bhṛtām) I (am) (aham) Rāma (rāmaḥ), of fish (jhaṣāṇām) I am (asmi) the makara --a sea monster-- (makaraḥ ca), (and) of rivers (srotasām) I am (asmi) Jāhnavī --the Ganges that emerged from the ears of the sage Jahnu-- (jāhnavī)"||31||


सर्गाणामादिरन्तश्च मध्यं चैवाहमर्जुन।
अध्यात्मविद्या विद्यानां वादः प्रवदतामहम्॥३२॥

Sargāṇāmādirantaśca madhyaṁ caivāhamarjuna|
Adhyātmavidyā vidyānāṁ vādaḥ pravadatāmaham||32||

"Of creations (sargāṇām), O Arjuna (arjuna)!, I (am) (aham) the beginning (ādiḥ), the end (antaḥ) and (ca... ca eva) the middle (madhyam). Of knowledges --or «of the sciences»-- (vidyānām) I (am) (aham) the knowledge of the Supreme Self --or «the science of the Supreme Self»-- (adhyātma-vidyā), (and) of those who speak (pravadatām) (I am) speech --this term is very ambiguous due to its multiple meanings-- (vādaḥ)"||32||


 अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि द्वन्द्वः सामासिकस्य च।
अहमेवाक्षयः कालो धाताहं विश्वतोमुखः॥३३॥

Akṣarāṇāmakāro'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca|
Ahamevākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṁ viśvatomukhaḥ||33||

"Of syllables (akṣarāṇām) I am (asmi) the letter «a» (a-kāraḥ), and (ca) of compounds --expected «sāmāsikānām»-- (sāmāsikasya) (I am) the dvandva --the copulative compound-- (dvandvaḥ), I Myself (am) (aham eka) the imperishable (akṣayaḥ) time (kālaḥ), (and) I (am also) (aham) the Creator (dhātā) whose face is turned everywhere (viśvatas-mukhaḥ)"||33||


मृत्युः सर्वहरश्चाहमुद्भवश्च भविष्यताम्।
कीर्तिः श्रीर्वाक्च नारीणां स्मृतिर्मेधा धृतिः क्षमा॥३४॥

Mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaścāhamudbhavaśca bhaviṣyatām|
Kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīṇāṁ smṛtirmedhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā||34||

"I (am) (aham) death (mṛtyuḥ) that destroys everything (sarva-hara) and (ca... ca) the source and origin (udbhavaḥ) of all future things (bhaviṣyatām). Of women (nārīṇām) (I am) fame (kīrtiḥ), beauty (śrīḥ), and (ca) speech (vāk), (along with) memory (smṛtiḥ), intelligence (medhā), constancy (dhṛtiḥ), (and) patience (kṣamā)"||34||


बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम्।
मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः॥३५॥

Bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṁ gāyatrī chandasāmaham|
Māsānāṁ mārgaśīrṣo'hamṛtūnāṁ kusumākaraḥ||35||

"Likewise (tathā), of the sāma-s --lit. of the hymns or songs of praise-- (sāmnām) (I am) Bṛhatsāma (bṛhatsāma), of meters (chandasām) I (am) (aham) Gāyatrī (gāyatrī), of months (māsānām) I (am) (aham) Mārgaśīrṣa --November-December-- (mārgaśīrṣaḥ), (and) of seasons (ṛtūnām) spring (kusumākaraḥ)"||35||


द्यूतं छलयतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम्।
जयोऽस्मि व्यवसायोऽस्मि सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम्॥३६॥

Dyūtaṁ chalayatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham|
Jayo'smi vyavasāyo'smi sattvaṁ sattvavatāmaham||36||

"Of those who deceive (chalayatām) I am (asmi) gambling --referring to games of chance, such as dice, etc.-- (dyūtam), (and) of the splendid (tejasvinām) I (am) (aham) splendor (tejas). I am (asmi) victory (jayaḥ), I am (asmi) determination --the translation as «effort» is also possible here-- (vyavasāyaḥ), (and) I (am also) (aham) sattva --the quality of goodness-- (sattvam) of the sāttvic ones --of those in whom this quality predominates-- (sattvavatām)"||36||


वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनञ्जयः।
मुनीनामप्यहं व्यासः कवीनामुशना कविः॥३७॥

Vṛṣṇīnāṁ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanañjayaḥ|
Munīnāmapyahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnāmuśanā kaviḥ||37||

"Of the Vṛṣṇi-s --the family from which Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself descends-- (vṛṣṇīnām) I am (asmi) Vāsudeva (vāsudevaḥ), of the Pāṇḍava-s --the descendants of Pāṇḍu-- (pāṇḍavānām) Dhanañjaya (dhanañjayaḥ), of the sages (munīnām) also (api) I (am) (aham) Vyāsa (vyāsaḥ), (and) of the poets--other translations are possible here--(kavīnām) the poet (kaviḥ) (named) Uśanā (uśanā)"||37||


दण्डो दमयतामस्मि नीतिरस्मि जिगीषताम्।
मौनं चैवास्मि गुह्यानां ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम्॥३८॥

Daṇḍo damayatāmasmi nītirasmi jigīṣatām|
Maunaṁ caivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatāmaham||38||

"Of those who subdue (damayatām) I am (asmi) the rod (daṇḍaḥ), of those who desire victory (jigīṣatām) I am (asmi) policy and prudence (nītiḥ), of secrets and mysteries (guhyānām) I am (asmi) silence (maunam ca eva), (and) of those endowed with knowledge (jñānavatām) I (am) (aham) knowledge (jñānam)"||38||


यच्चापि सर्वभूतानां बीजं तदहमर्जुन।
न तदस्ति विना यत्स्यान्मया भूतं चराचरम्॥३९॥

Yaccāpi sarvabhūtānāṁ bījaṁ tadahamarjuna|
Na tadasti vinā yatsyānmayā bhūtaṁ carācaram||39||

"Moreover (ca api), whatever (yad) (might be) the Seed (bījam) of all beings (sarva-bhūtānām), O Arjuna (arjuna)!, I (am) (aham) That (tad). Without (vinā) Me (mayā), there is (na... asti) nothing that --lit. that which-- (tad... yad) could be (syāt) a mobile or immobile (cara-acaram) being (bhūtam)"||39||


नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परन्तप।
एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया॥४०॥

Nānto'sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ parantapa|
Eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūtervistaro mayā||40||

"There is (na... asti) no end (antaḥ) to My divine and glorious expansions (mama divyānām vibhūtīnām), O destroyer of enemies (parantapa)! However (tu), I have declared (proktaḥ... mayā) this (eṣaḥ) detailed description (vistaraḥ) of (My) glorious expansion (vibhūteḥ) by way of illustration (uddeśatas)"||40||


 यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा।
तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंशसम्भवम्॥४१॥

Yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṁ śrīmadūrjitameva vā|
Tattadevāvagaccha tvaṁ mama tejoṁśasambhavam||41||

"Whatever (be) (yad yad) the glorious (vibhūtimat), beautiful (śrīmat) or (vā) powerful (ūrjitam eva) entity (sattvam), understand (avaccha tvam) that that very thing --that is, said entity-- (tad tad eva) has arisen from a portion of My Splendor (mama teja-aṁśa-sambhavam)"||41||


अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन।
विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत्॥४२॥

Athavā bahunaitena kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna|
Viṣṭabhyāhamidaṁ kṛtsnamekāṁśena sthito jagat||42||

"Or rather (athavā), O Arjuna (arjuna)!, what do you need to know this extensively for (bahunā etena kim jñātena tava)? I (aham) continue sustaining (viṣṭabhya... sthitaḥ) all (kṛtsnam) of this (idam) universe (jagat) by a portion (of Myself) (eka-aṁśena)"||42||
