The Yoga of the Vision of the Universal Form
Introduction
Now Lord Kṛṣṇa will show Arjuna His Universal Form.
Important: All that is in brackets and italicized within the translation has been added by me in order to complete the sense of a particular phrase or sentence. In turn, all that is between double hyphen (--...--) constitutes clarifying further information also added by me. In addition, note that I will use quotation marks to delimit text only when the person speaking is not Sañjaya himself (the narrator). Therefore, the words spoken by Sañjaya will not be delimited by quotation marks.
Chapter 11: Viśvarūpadarśayoga (The Yoga of the Vision of the Universal Form)
अर्जुन उवाच
मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम्।
यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं विगतो मम॥१॥
Arjuna uvāca
Madanugrahāya paramaṁ guhyamadhyātmasañjñitam|
Yattvayoktaṁ vacastena moho'yaṁ vigato mama||1||
Arjuna (arjunaḥ) said (uvāca):
"This (ayam) delusion (mohaḥ) of mine (mama) has completely vanished (vigataḥ) due to the words (vacas tena) spoken (uktam) by You (tvayā) to bestow Grace upon me (mad-anugrahāya), (and) which (yad) (are) the supreme (paramam) mystery (guhyam) called the Highest Self (adhyātma-sañjñitam)"||1||
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया।
त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम्॥२॥
Bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṁ śrutau vistaraśo mayā|
Tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam||2||
"O You, whose eyes (look) like lotus petals (kamala-patra-akṣa)!, I have heard from You the birth and disappearance (bhava-apyayau hi... śrutau... mayā... tvattas) of beings (bhūtānām) in great detail (vistaraśas), as well as (api ca) (Your) imperishable (avyayam) (and) exalted Majesty (māhātmyam)"||2||
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम॥३॥
Evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṁ parameśvara|
Draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṁ puruṣottama||3||
"O Supreme Lord (parama-īśvara)!, just as (yathā) You have spoken (āttha tvam) of Yourself (ātmānam), this (etad) (is) so (evam). O You, the Best among men (puruṣa-uttama)!, I desire (icchāmi) to see (draṣṭum) Your (te) Majestic/Divine (aiśvaram) Form (rūpam)"||3||
मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो।
योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम्॥४॥
Manyase yadi tacchakyaṁ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho|
Yogeśvara tato me tvaṁ darśayātmānamavyayam||4||
"O Lord (prabho)!, «If (yadi) You think (manyase) that it is possible for me (śakyam mayā) to see (draṣṭum) that (tad... iti)», then (tatas), O Lord of Yoga (yoga-īśvara)!, show me (me tvam darśaya) the imperishable Self (ātmānam avyayam)"||4||
श्रीभगवानुवाच
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः।
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च॥५॥
Śrībhagavānuvāca
Paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ|
Nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca||5||
The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):
"O son of Pṛthā (pārtha)!, behold (paśya) My (me) forms (rūpāṇi), by hundreds (śataśas) and (atha) by thousands (sahasraśas), of various kinds (nānāvidhāni), divine (divyāni) and (ca) with multiple colors and forms (nānā-varṇa-ākṛtīni)"||5||
पश्यादित्यान्वसून्रुद्रानश्विनौ मरुतस्तथा।
बहून्यदृष्टपूर्वाणि पश्याश्चर्याणि भारत॥६॥
Paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā|
Bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata||6||
"Behold (paśya) the Āditya-s (ādityān), the Vasu-s (vasūn), the Rudra-s (rudrān), the two Aśvī-s (aśvinau), as well as (tathā) the Marut-s (marutaḥ)! O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), behold (paśya) the many Wonders never seen before (bahūni adṛṣṭapūrvāṇi... āścaryāṇi)"||6||
इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम्।
मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्चान्यद्द्रष्टुमिच्छसि॥७॥
Ihaikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ paśyādya sacarācaram|
Mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi||7||
"Behold (paśya) the entire (kṛtsnam) universe (jagat) that includes (all) that moves and does not move (sa-cara-acaram), and (ca) anything else (yad... anyat) that you wish (icchasi) to see (draṣṭum), O thick-haired One (guḍā-keśa), abiding as one --unified-- (eka-stham) today (adya) here (iha) in My Body (mama dehe)!"||7||
न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा।
दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्॥८॥
Na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā|
Divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram||8||
"But (tu) you cannot (na... śakyase) see Me (mām... draṣṭum) with these your eyes (anena eva sva-cakṣuṣā). I give you (dadāmi te) the Divine (divyam) Eye (cakṣus). Behold (paśya) My (me) Majestic/Divine (aiśvaram) Yoga (yogam)!"||8||
सञ्जय उवाच
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्महायोगेश्वरो हरिः।
दर्शयामास पार्थाय परमं रूपमैश्वरम्॥९॥
Sañjaya uvāca
Evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ|
Darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṁ rūpamaiśvaram||9||
Sañjaya (sañjayaḥ) said (uvāca):
Having thus spoken (evam uktvā), therefore (tatas), O king (rājan)!, the Great Lord of Yoga (mahā-yoga-īśvaraḥ), Hari (hariḥ), showed to the son of Pṛthā (darśayāmāsa pārthāya) (His) Supreme (paramam) (and) Majestic/Divine (aiśvaram) Form (rūpam)||9||
अनेकवक्त्रनयनमनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम्।
अनेकदिव्याभरणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम्॥१०॥
Anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam|
Anekadivyābharaṇaṁ divyānekodyatāyudham||10||
(That Form of His) had many mouths and eyes (aneka-vaktra-nayanam), many wondrous visions (aneka-adbhuta-darśanam), many divine ornaments (aneka-divya-ābharaṇam), (and) many divine uplifted weapons (divya-aneka-udyata-āyudham)||10||
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम्।
सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवमनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम्॥११॥
Divyamālyāmbaradharaṁ divyagandhānulepanam|
Sarvāścaryamayaṁ devamanantaṁ viśvatomukham||11||
(That Form of His) wore divine garlands and garments (divya-mālya-ambara-dharam), with divine fragrances and unguents (divya-gandha-anulepanam), (and) was made of all wonders (sarva-āścarya-mayam), celestial (devam), infinite (anantam), (and) with faces turned in all directions (viśvatas-mukham)||11||
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः॥१२॥
Divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā|
Yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ||12||
If (yadi) the splendor (bhāḥ) of a thousand suns (sūrya-sahasrasya) were to arise/manifest (bhavet... utthitā) simultaneously (yugapad) in the sky (divi), that (sā) would be (syāt) similar to (sadṛśī) the Splendor (bhāsaḥ) of that Great Self (tasya mahā-ātmanaḥ)||12||
तत्रैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं प्रविभक्तमनेकधा।
अपश्यद्देवदेवस्य शरीरे पाण्डवस्तदा॥१३॥
Tatraikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ pravibhaktamanekadhā|
Apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā||13||
There (tatra), in the body (śarīre) of the God of gods (deva-devasya), the descendant of Pāṇḍu --Arjuna-- (pāṇḍavaḥ) then (tadā) saw (apaśyat) the entire (kṛtsnam) universe (jagat), divided (pravibhaktam) in various ways (anekadhā), (and) abiding as one --abiding unified-- (eka-stham)||13||
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो हृष्टरोमा धनञ्जयः।
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं कृताञ्जलिरभाषत॥१४॥
Tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ|
Praṇamya śirasā devaṁ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata||14||
After that (tatas), he (saḥ), the conqueror of wealth --Arjuna-- (dhanañjaya), filled with wonder (vismaya-āviṣṭaḥ), with his hairs standing on end (hṛṣṭa-romā), after offering obeisance (praṇamya) to God --or "to the God"-- (devam) with (his) head (śirasā), spoke (abhāṣata) with hands folded (kṛtāñjaliḥ)||14||
अर्जुन उवाच
पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसङ्घान्।
ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थमृषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान्॥१५॥
Arjuna uvāca
Paśyāmi devāṁstava deva dehe sarvāṁstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān|
Brahmāṇamīśaṁ kamalāsanasthamṛṣīṁśca sarvānuragāṁśca divyān||15||
Arjuna (arjunaḥ) said (uvāca):
"O God (deva)!, I see (paśyāmi) in Your Body (tava... dehe) all (sarvān) the gods (devān), as well as the various/particular hosts of beings (bhūta-viśeṣa-saṅghān), Lord (īśam) Brahmā (brahmāṇam) seated on a lotus (kamala-āsana-stham), and (ca) all (sarvān) the seers (ṛṣīn) and (ca) divine (divyān) serpents (uragān)"||15||
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रं पश्यामि त्वां सर्वतोऽनन्तरूपम्।
नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप॥१६॥
Anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṁ paśyāmi tvāṁ sarvato'nantarūpam|
Nāntaṁ na madhyaṁ na punastavādiṁ paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa||16||
"I see You (paśyāmi tvām) with infinite forms everywhere (sarvatas-ananta-rūpam), with many arms, bellies, faces and eyes (aneka-bāhu-udara-vaktra-netram). However (punar), I do not see (na... paśyāmi) either (na) Your (tava) beginning (ādim) or (na) (Your) end (antam) or (na) (Your) middle region (madhyam), O Lord of the universe (viśva-īśvara), O Universal Form (viśva-rūpa)!"||16||
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं च तेजोराशिं सर्वतो दीप्तिमन्तम्।
पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समन्ताद्दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम्॥१७॥
Kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakriṇaṁ ca tejorāśiṁ sarvato dīptimantam|
Paśyāmi tvāṁ durnirīkṣyaṁ samantāddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam||17||
"I see You (paśyāmi tvām) wearing a crown/diadem (kirīṭinam), armed with a club (gadinam) and (ca) bearing a discus (cakriṇam), a mass of splendor (tejas-rāśim), entirely (sarvatas) radiant (dīptimantam), difficult to behold (durnirīkṣyam), with the radiance of a blazing fire and the sun (dīpta-anala-arka-dyutim) all around (samantāt), immeasurable (aprameyam)"||17||
त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्।
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे॥१८॥
Tvamakṣaraṁ paramaṁ veditavyaṁ tvamasya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam|
Tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā sanātanastvaṁ puruṣo mato me||18||
"You (tvam) (are) undecaying (akṣaram), supreme (paramam), and to be known (veditavyam). You (tvam) (are) the Resting place/the Receptacle/the Treasure (muestra) —in the highest degree --or "the Supreme Resting Place", etc.-- (param)— of this universe (asya viśvasya). You (tvam) (are) immutable (avyayaḥ), the Protector of the perpetual dharma (śāśvata-dharma-goptā). I consider You (tvam... mataḥ me) (as) the Eternal (sanātanaḥ) Person (puruṣaḥ)"||18||
अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्यमनन्तबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम्।
पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम्॥१९॥
Anādimadhyāntamanantavīryamanantabāhuṁ śaśisūryanetram|
Paśyāmi tvāṁ dīptahutāśavaktraṁ svatejasā viśvamidaṁ tapantam||19||
"I see You (paśyāmi tvām) without beginning, middle, and end (an-ādi-madhya-antam), with infinite power (ananta-vīryam), with countless arms (ananta-bāhum), with the moon and sun as (Your) eyes (śaśi-sūrya-netram), with (Your) face like blazing fire (dīpta-hutāśa-vaktram), (and) heating (tapantam) this universe (viśvam idam) with Your radiance (sva-tejasā)"||19||
द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः।
दृष्ट्वाद्भुतं रूपमुग्रं तवेदं लोकत्रयं प्रव्यथितं महात्मन्॥२०॥
Dyāvāpṛthivyoridamantaraṁ hi vyāptaṁ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ|
Dṛṣṭvādbhutaṁ rūpamugraṁ tavedaṁ lokatrayaṁ pravyathitaṁ mahātman||20||
"This (idam) intermediate space (antaram) between Heaven and earth (dyāvā-pṛthivyoḥ) is undoubtedly pervaded (hi vyāptam) by You alone (tvayā ekena), as well as (ca) all (sarvāḥ) directions (diśaḥ). After seeing (dṛṣṭvā) this (idam) extraordinary (adbhutam) (and) formidable (ugram) Form (rūpam) of Yours (tava), O High-souled One (mahātman)!, the three worlds (loka-trayam) are affrightened (pravyathitam)"||20||
अमी हि त्वां सुरसङ्घा विशन्ति केचिद्भीताः प्राञ्जलयो गृणन्ति।
स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा महर्षिसिद्धसङ्घाः स्तुवन्ति त्वां स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः॥२१॥
Amī hi tvāṁ surasaṅghā viśanti kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti|
Svastītyuktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ stuvanti tvāṁ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ||21||
"Those (amī hi) hosts of gods (sura-saṅghāḥ) are entering (viśanti) into You (tvām). Some (kecid), frightened (bhītāḥ), invoke (You) (gṛṇanti) with joined hands (prāñjalayaḥ). After saying (uktvā) 'Hail!' (svasti iti), hosts of great seers and perfected beings (mahā-ṛṣi-siddha-saṅghāḥ) extol You (stuvanti tvām) with copious hymns of praise (stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ)"||21||
रुद्रादित्या वसवो ये च साध्या विश्वेश्विनौ मरुतश्चोष्मपाश्च।
गन्धर्वयक्षासुरसिद्धसङ्घा वीक्षन्ते त्वां विस्मिताश्चैव सर्वे॥२२॥
Rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā viśveśvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca|
Gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṅghā vīkṣante tvāṁ vismitāścaiva sarve||22||
"Rudra-s and Āditya-s (rudra-ādityāḥ), Vasu-s (vasavaḥ), Sādhya-s (sādhyāḥ), Viśva-s (viśve), the two Aśvī-s (aśvinau), Marut-s (marutaḥ) and (ye ca... ca... ca) Ūṣmapa-s --a class of ancestors-- (ūṣmapāḥ), (together with) the hosts of celestial musicians, Yakṣa-s, demons, and perfected beings (gandharva-yakṣa-asura-siddha-saṅghāḥ)... all (sarve) gaze at You attentively (vīkṣante tvām) and (ca eva) are amazed (vismitāḥ)"||22||
रूपं महत्ते बहुवक्त्रनेत्रं महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम्।
बहूदरं बहुदंष्ट्राकरालं दृष्ट्वा लोकाः प्रव्यथितास्तथाहम्॥२३॥
Rūpaṁ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṁ mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam|
Bahūdaraṁ bahudaṁṣṭrākarālaṁ dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathāham||23||
"O You of great arms (mahā-bāho)!, after seeing (dṛṣṭvā) Your (te) Great (mahat) Form (rūpam) endowed with many faces and eyes (bahu-vaktra-netram), with many arms, thighs, and feet (bahu-bāhu-ūru-pādam), with many bellies (bahu-udaram), with many and formidable tusks --referring to elephant tusks-- (bahu-daṁṣṭrā-karālam), the worlds --or also "the people"-- (lokāḥ) are affrightened (pravyathitāḥ), as am I (tathā aham)"||23||
नभःस्पृशं दीप्तमनेकवर्णं व्यात्ताननं दीप्तविशालनेत्रम्।
दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो॥२४॥
Nabhaḥspṛśaṁ dīptamanekavarṇaṁ vyāttānanaṁ dīptaviśālanetram|
Dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo||24||
"After seeing You (dṛṣṭvā hi tvām) touching the firmament (nabhas-spṛśam), blazing (dīptam), with many colors (aneka-varṇam), with mouth fully open (vyātta-ānanam), (and) with large flaming eyes (dīpta-viśāla-netram), O Viṣṇu (viṣṇo)!, I, with my inner Self affrightened (pravyathita-antar-ātmā), do not find (na vindāmi) (either) steadiness/contentment (dhṛtim) or (ca) tranquility/peace (śamam)"||24||
दंष्ट्राकरालानि च ते मुखानि दृष्ट्वैव कालानलसन्निभानि।
दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास॥२५॥
Daṁṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni|
Diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa||25||
"And (ca) having seen (dṛṣṭvā eva) Your (te) mouths (mukhāni) with formidable tusks --referring to elephant tusks-- (daṁṣṭrā-karālāni) --like the fire of time (kāla-anala-sannibhāni)--, I am not aware (na jāne) of the directions (diśaḥ), and (ca) I do not find (na labhe) refuge (śarma). O Lord of the gods (deva-īśa), Abode of the universe (jagat-nivāsa), be gracious (prasīda)!"||25||
अमी च त्वां धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राः सर्वे सहैवावनिपालसङ्घैः।
भीष्मो द्रोणः सूतपुत्रस्तथासौ सहास्मदीयैरपि योधमुख्यैः॥२६॥
Amī ca tvāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ sarve sahaivāvanipālasaṅghaiḥ|
Bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūtaputrastathāsau sahāsmadīyairapi yodhamukhyaiḥ||26||
"And (ca) toward You (tvām) (go) all (sarve) those (amī) sons (putrāḥ) of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya), together with the hosts of kings (saha eva avanipāla-saṅghaiḥ), Bhīṣma (bhīṣmaḥ), Droṇa (droṇaḥ) and (tathā) that (asau) son of Sūta --that is, Karṇa-- (sūta-putraḥ), along with our chief warriors (saha asmadīyaiḥ api yodhamukhyaiḥ)"||26||
वक्त्राणि ते त्वरमाणा विशन्ति दंष्ट्राकरालानि भयानकानि।
केचिद्विलग्ना दशनान्तरेषु सन्दृश्यन्ते चूर्णितैरुत्तमाङ्गैः॥२७॥
Vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇā viśanti daṁṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni|
Kecidvilagnā daśanāntareṣu sandṛśyante cūrṇitairuttamāṅgaiḥ||27||
"They (te) enter (viśanti) hastily (tvaramāṇāḥ) into (Your) terrifying (bhayānakāni) mouths (vaktrāṇi) with formidable tusks --referring to elephant tusks-- (daṁṣṭrā-karālāni). Some (kecid), clinging (vilagnāḥ) between Your teeth (daśana-antareṣu), are seen (sandṛśyante) with (their) crushed heads (cūrṇitaiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ)"||27||
यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बुवेगाः समुद्रमेवाभिमुखा द्रवन्ति।
तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा विशन्ति वक्त्राण्यभिविज्वलन्ति॥२८॥
Yathā nadīnāṁ bahavo'mbuvegāḥ samudramevābhimukhā dravanti|
Tathā tavāmī naralokavīrā viśanti vaktrāṇyabhivijvalanti||28||
"Just as (yathā) many (bahavaḥ) torrents --lit. streams of water-- (ambu-vegāḥ) of rivers (nadīnām) flow (abhimukhāḥ dravanti) only toward the ocean (samudram eva), similarly (tathā) those (amī) heroes of the world of men (nara-loka-vīrāḥ) enter (viśanti) Your flaming mouths (tava... vaktrāṇi abhivijvalanti)"||28||
यथा प्रदीप्तं ज्वलनं पतङ्गा विशन्ति नाशाय समृद्धवेगाः।
तथैव नाशाय विशन्ति लोकास्तवापि वक्त्राणि समृद्धवेगाः॥२९॥
Yathā pradīptaṁ jvalanaṁ pataṅgā viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ|
Tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokāstavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ||29||
"Just as (yathā) the moths of light (pataṅgāḥ) very swiftly --lit. with excessive speed-- (samṛddha-vegāḥ) enter (viśanti) the blazing fire (pradīptam jvalanam) to be destroyed (nāśāya), likewise (tathā eva) men (lokāḥ) enter (viśanti) with great haste (samṛddha-vegāḥ) into Your mouths (tava api vaktrāṇi) to be annihilated (nāśāya)"||29||
लेलिह्यसे ग्रसमानः समन्ताद्लोकान्समग्रान्वदनैर्ज्वलद्भिः।
तेजोभिरापूर्य जगत्समग्रं भासस्तवोग्राः प्रतपन्ति विष्णो॥३०॥
Lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantādlokānsamagrānvadanairjvaladbhiḥ|
Tejobhirāpūrya jagatsamagraṁ bhāsastavogrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo||30||
"You lick around --this is an intensive of the root "lih", meaning "to lick"-- (lelihyase) devouring (grasamānaḥ) all men/worlds (lokān samagrān) everywhere (samantāt) with (Your) burning mouths (vadanaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ). O Viṣṇu (viṣṇo)!, after filling (āpūrya) the entire universe (jagat samagram) with Your Splendors/Fierce energies (tejobhiḥ... tava), Your (tava) formidable (ugrāḥ) rays of light (bhāsaḥ) heat/torment (it) (pratapanti)"||30||
आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपो नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद।
विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमाद्यं न हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम्॥३१॥
Ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo namo'stu te devavara prasīda|
Vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṁ na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim||31||
"Tell me (ākhyāhi me) who (kaḥ) You (bhavān) are, who have a formidable form (ugra-rūpaḥ). Salutation be (namas astu) to You (te), O best of the gods (deva-vara), be gracious (prasīda)! I desire (icchāmi) to know You (vijñātum... bhavantam) as the Primordial (ādyam), because (hi) I do not know (na... prajānāmi) Your (tava) conduct --the term «pravṛtti» is too ambiguous with many possible meanings-- (pravṛttim)"||31||
श्रीभगवानुवाच
कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो लोकान्समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः।
ऋतेऽपि त्वां न भविष्यन्ति सर्वे येऽवस्थिताः प्रत्यनीकेषु योधाः॥३२॥
Śrībhagavānuvāca
Kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ|
Ṛte'pi tvāṁ na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ||32||
The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):
"I am (asmi) the world-destroying Time (kālaḥ... loka-kṣaya-kṛt), fully developed (pravṛddhaḥ). Here (iha), (I) am going (pravṛttaḥ) to annihilate (samāhartum) people (lokān). Even (api) without (ṛte) you (tvām) --without Arjuna's help--, all (sarve) the warriors (yodhāḥ) who (ye) are stationed (avasthitāḥ) in the armies of the enemy (pratyanīkeṣu) will cease to exist (na bhaviṣyanti)"||32||
तस्मात्त्वमुत्तिष्ठ यशो लभस्व जित्वा शत्रून्भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं समृद्धम्।
मयैवैते निहताः पूर्वमेव निमित्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाचिन्॥३३॥
Tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva jitvā śatrūnbhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham|
Mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvameva nimittamātraṁ bhava savyasācin||33||
"Therefore (tasmāt), stand up (tvam uttiṣṭha), obtain (labhasva) glory (yaśaḥ), (and) after conquering (jitvā) your enemies (śatrūn), enjoy (bhuṅkṣva) a prosperous and flourishing (samṛddham) kingdom (rājyam)! O ambidextrous one (savyasācin), I have (already) slain them (mayā eva ete... nihatāḥ) before (pūrvam eva), be (bhava) merely the instrumental cause (nimitta-mātram)!"||33||
द्रोणं च भीष्मं च जयद्रथं च कर्णं तथान्यानपि योधवीरान्।
मया हतांस्त्वं जहि मा व्यथिष्ठा युध्यस्व जेतासि रणे सपत्नान्॥३४॥
Droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca jayadrathaṁ ca karṇaṁ tathānyānapi yodhavīrān|
Mayā hatāṁstvaṁ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān||34||
"Slay (tvam jahi) Droṇa (droṇam), Bhīṣma (bhīṣmam), Jayadratha (jayadratham), and (ca... ca... ca) Karṇa (karṇam), as well as (tathā api) the other (anyān) heroic warriors (yodha-vīrān) whom I (already) have slain (mayā hatān)! Don't be restless and mentally disturbed (mā vyathiṣṭhā), (and) fight (yudhyasva)! You will conquer (jetāsi) your enemies (sapatnān) in battle (raṇe)"||34||
सञ्जय उवाच
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं केशवस्य कृताञ्जलिर्वेपमानः किरीटी।
नमस्कृत्वा भूय एवाह कृष्णं सगद्गदं भीतभीतः प्रणम्य॥३५॥
Sañjaya uvāca
Etacchrutvā vacanaṁ keśavasya kṛtāñjalirvepamānaḥ kirīṭī|
Namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṁ sagadgadaṁ bhītabhītaḥ praṇamya||35||
Sañjaya (sañjayaḥ) said (uvāca):
After hearing (śrutvā) these (etad) words (vacanam) of the Long-haired One --of Kṛṣṇa-- (keśavasya), the one who wears a crown/diadem --Arjuna-- (kirīṭī), with hands joined (kṛtāñjaliḥ) (and) trembling (vepamānaḥ), after again offering salutation (namaskṛtvā bhūyas eva) (and) after bowing down (praṇamya) excessively frightened (bhītabhītaḥ), spoke to Kṛṣṇa (āha kṛṣṇam) stammering (sagadgadam)||35||
अर्जुन उवाच
स्थाने हृषीकेश तव प्रकीर्त्या जगत्प्रहृष्यत्यनुरज्यते च।
रक्षांसि भीतानि दिशो द्रवन्ति सर्वे नमस्यन्ति च सिद्धसङ्घाः॥३६॥
Arjuna uvāca
Sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā jagatprahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca|
Rakṣāṁsi bhītāni diśo dravanti sarve namasyanti ca siddhasaṅghāḥ||36||
Arjuna (arjunaḥ) said (uvāca):
"O Lord of the senses (hṛṣīkeśa)! By praising You (tava prakīrtyā), the universe (jagat) rightly (sthāne) rejoices (prahṛṣyati) and (ca) delights (anurajyate). The rakṣas-s --evil demons-- (rakṣāṁsi), fearful (bhītāni), run (dravanti) (in all) directions (diśaḥ), and (ca) all (sarve) the hosts of perfected beings (siddha-saṅghāḥ) bow down (before You) (namasyanti)"||36||
कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे।
अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत्॥३७॥
Kasmācca te na nameranmahātman garīyase brahmaṇo'pyādikartre|
Ananta deveśa jagannivāsa tvamakṣaraṁ sadasattatparaṁ yat||37||
"O High-souled One (mahā-ātman)!, and (ca) why (kasmāt) should they not bow (te na nameran) to the Primordial Creator (ādi-kartre), who is even greater --lit. «more Guru»-- (garīyase... api) than Brahmā (brahmaṇaḥ)? O Infinite One (ananta), Lord of the gods (deva-īśa), Abode of the universe (jagat-nivāsa)! You (tvam) (are) imperishable (akṣaram), being and non-being (sat asat), (and) That (tad) which (yad) (is) Supreme --or «beyond»-- (param)"||37||
त्वमादिदेवः पुरुषः पुराणस्त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्।
वेत्तासि वेद्यं च परं च धाम त्वया ततं विश्वमनन्तरूप॥३८॥
Tvamādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇastvamasya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam|
Vettāsi vedyaṁ ca paraṁ ca dhāma tvayā tataṁ viśvamanantarūpa||38||
"You (tvam) (are) the First God (ādi-devaḥ), the Ancient/Primordial Person (purāṇaḥ puruṣaḥ). You (tvam) (are) the Supreme (param) Treasure/Abode (nidhānam) of this universe (asya viśvasya). You are (asi) (both) the Knower (vettā) and (ca) the knowable object (vedyam), and also (ca) the Supreme Abode (param dhāma). O You of Infinite Form (ananta-rūpa)!, the universe (viśvam) is pervaded (tatam) by You (tvayā)"||38||
वायुर्यमोऽग्निर्वरुणः शशाङ्कः प्रजापतिस्त्वं प्रपितामहश्च।
नमो नमस्तेऽस्तु सहस्रकृत्वः पुनश्च भूयोऽपि नमो नमस्ते॥३९॥
Vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ prajāpatistvaṁ prapitāmahaśca|
Namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste||39||
"You (tvam) (are) Vāyu (vāyuḥ), Yama (yamaḥ), Agni (agniḥ), Varuṇa (varuṇaḥ), the Moon (śaśāṅkaḥ), Prajāpati (prajāpatiḥ), and (ca) the paternal great-grandfather (prapitāmahaḥ). May salutations be (offered) (namas namas... astu) to You (te) a thousand times (sahasrakṛtvas)! Repeated salutations (namas namas) to You (te) again (punar), and even (ca... api) again (bhūyas)!"||39||
नमः पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतस्ते नमोऽस्तु ते सर्वत एव सर्व।
अनन्तवीर्यामितविक्रमस्त्वं सर्वं समाप्नोषि ततोऽसि सर्वः॥४०॥
Namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva|
Anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṁ sarvaṁ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ||40||
"Salutation (namas) to You (te) from the front (purastāt) and (atha) from behind (pṛṣṭhatas). May a salutation be (offered) (namas astu) to You (te) from all directions (sarvatas eva), O All (sarva)! You (tvam), being of infinite power and immeasurable heroism/strength (ananta-vīrya-amita-vikramaḥ), pervade everything (sarvam samāpnoṣi), (and) therefore (tatas), are (asi) all (sarvaḥ)"||40||
सखेति मत्वा प्रसभं यदुक्तं हे कृष्ण हे यादव हे सखेति।
अजानता महिमानं तवेदं मया प्रमादात्प्रणयेन वाऽपि॥४१॥
यच्चावहासार्थमसत्कृतोऽसि विहारशय्यासनभोजनेषु।
एकोऽथवाप्यच्युत तत्समक्षं तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम्॥४२॥
Sakheti matvā prasabhaṁ yaduktaṁ he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti|
Ajānatā mahimānaṁ tavedaṁ mayā pramādātpraṇayena vā'pi||41||
Yaccāvahāsārthamasatkṛto'si vihāraśayyāsanabhojaneṣu|
Eko'thavāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṁ tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam||42||
"Not knowing (ajānatā... mayā) this (idam) Greatness (mahimānam) of Yours (tava), whatever (yad) I may have said (uktam... mayā) violently/importunately (prasabham), thinking (matvā) «Friend» --that is, that Kṛṣṇa was Arjuna’s friend-- (sakhā iti), out of negligence (pramādāt) or even (vā api) out of affection (praṇayena), O (he) Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇa), O (he) descendant of Yadu (yādava), O (he) friend (sakhā iti)!, (and) if (yad ca) You were --lit. «are»-- disrespected (asatkṛtaḥ asi) in jest (avahāsa-artham) during play, on the bed, while sitting or eating (vihāra-śayyā-āsana-bhojaneṣu), (whether) alone (ekaḥ) or even (athavā api) openly --lit. in their presence-- (tad-samakṣam), O Acyuta! --Imperishable One, He Who has not fallen-- (acyuta), I (aham) ask You, who are immeasurable, pardon (kṣāmaye tvām... aprameyam) for that (tad)"||41-42||
पितासि लोकस्य चराचरस्य त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गुरुर्गरीयान्।
न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिकः कुतोऽन्यो लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रतिमप्रभाव॥४३॥
Pitāsi lokasya carācarasya tvamasya pūjyaśca gururgarīyān|
Na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikaḥ kuto'nyo lokatraye'pyapratimaprabhāva||43||
"You (tvam) are (asi) the Father (pitā) of this world consisting of what moves and does not move (lokasya cara-acarasya... asya), (You are) the Object of Adoration (pūjyaḥ), the Guru (guruḥ), and (ca) Someone Greater/Venerable (than the Guru) (garīyān). There is no (na... asti) (other) equal to You (tvat-samaḥ). O You of unequalled Power/Majesty (apratima-prabhāva)!, how (could there be) (kutas) another (anyaḥ) superior (to You) (abhyadhikaḥ) in the three worlds (loka-traye api)?"||43||
तस्मात्प्रणम्य प्रणिधाय कायं प्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम्।
पितेव पुत्रस्य सखेव सख्युः प्रियः प्रियाया अर्हसि देव सोढुम्॥४४॥
Tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṁ prasādaye tvāmahamīśamīḍyam|
Piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ priyaḥ priyāyā arhasi deva soḍhum||44||
"Therefore (tasmāt), bowing (praṇamya) (and) prostrating (praṇidhāya) (my) body (kāyam), I (aham) propitiate You, Lord Worthy of Praise (prasādaye tvām... īśam īḍyam). O God (deva)!, please be patient (with me) --«mama» was omitted-- (arhasi... soḍhum) just as (iva... iva) the father (pitā) (is patient) with (his) son (putrasya), the friend (sakhā) with the friend (sakhyuḥ), (and) the beloved man (priyaḥ) with the beloved woman (priyāyāḥ)"||44||
अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितोऽस्मि दृष्ट्वा भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे।
तदेव मे दर्शय देव रूपं प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास॥४५॥
Adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā bhayena ca pravyathitaṁ mano me|
Tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṁ prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa||45||
"I am pleased/happy (hṛṣitaḥ asmi) seeing (dṛṣṭvā) what has never been seen before (adṛṣṭa-pūrvam), but (ca) my (me) mind (manas) is distressed (pravyathitam) by fear (bhayena). O God (deva), show me (me darśaya) that (tad eva) form --it refers to Kṛṣṇa's human form-- (rūpam)! Be gracious (prasīda), O Lord of the gods (deva-īśa), O Abode of the universe (jagat-nivāsa)!"||45||
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रहस्तमिच्छामि त्वां द्रष्टुमहं तथैव।
तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन सहस्रबाहो भव विश्वमूर्ते॥४६॥
Kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakrahastamicchāmi tvāṁ draṣṭumahaṁ tathaiva|
Tenaiva rūpeṇa caturbhujena sahasrabāho bhava viśvamūrte||46||
"I (aham) desire (icchāmi) to see You (tvām draṣṭum) wearing a crown/diadem (kirīṭinam), armed with a club (gadinam), and (tathā eva) holding the Discus in hand (cakra-hastam). O You of thousand arms (sahasra-bāho) endowed with a Universal Form (viśva-mūrte), become Yourself (bhava) with that very same four-armed form (tena eva rūpeṇa catur-bhujena)!"||46||
श्रीभगवानुवाच
मया प्रसन्नेन तवार्जुनेदं रूपं परं दर्शितमात्मयोगात्।
तेजोमयं विश्वमनन्तमाद्यं यन्मे त्वदन्येन न दृष्टपूर्वम्॥४७॥
Śrībhagavānuvāca
Mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṁ rūpaṁ paraṁ darśitamātmayogāt|
Tejomayaṁ viśvamanantamādyaṁ yanme tvadanyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam||47||
The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):
"By Me, (already) pleased (mayā prasannena) with you (tava), O Arjuna (arjuna)!, —through My Yoga --or "through the Yoga of the Self"-- (ātma-yogāt)—, has been shown (darśitam) this (idam) supreme (param), radiant (tejas-mayam), infinite (anantam) (and) primordial (ādyam) Universal (viśvam) Form (rūpam) of Mine (me) which (yad) has never been seen before (na dṛṣṭa-pūrvam) by anyone other than you (tvad-anyena)"||47||
न वेद यज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानैर्न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः।
एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर॥४८॥
Na veda yajñādhyayanairna dānairna ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ|
Evaṁrūpaḥ śakya ahaṁ nṛloke draṣṭuṁ tvadanyena kurupravīra||48||
"Neither (na) through the Vedas, sacrifices, and studies (veda-yajña-adhyayanaiḥ), nor (na) through acts of charity (dānaiḥ), nor (na ca) through rituals (kriyābhiḥ), nor (na) through severe austerities (tapobhiḥ ugraiḥ), can anyone other than you see me (śakyaḥ aham... draṣṭum tvad-anyena) in such Form (evaṁrūpaḥ) in the world of men (nṛ-loke), O hero of the Kurus (kuru-pravīra)!"||48||
मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम्।
व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य॥४९॥
Mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo dṛṣṭvā rūpaṁ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam|
Vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṁ tadeva me rūpamidaṁ prapaśya||49||
"May there be for you (no) agitation or confusion --lit. «a confused state»-- (mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍha-bhāvaḥ) upon seeing (dṛṣṭvā) this (idam) terrible (ghoram) Form (rūpam) of Mine (mama) endowed with such qualities (īdṛk)! Free from fear (vyapetabhīḥ) (and) gratified in (your) mind (prītamanāḥ), therefore --if «tad eva» is joined with «idam», it could mean "that very" or even "this very", straining the text slightly-- (tad eva), behold (prapaśya) again (punar) this (idam) Form --the form as human Kṛṣṇa-- (rūpam) of Mine (me)!"||49||
सञ्जय उवाच
इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः।
आश्वासयामास च भीतमेनं भूत्वा पुनः सौम्यवपुर्महात्मा॥५०॥
Sañjaya uvāca
Ityarjunaṁ vāsudevastathoktvā svakaṁ rūpaṁ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ|
Āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṁ bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā||50||
Sañjaya (sañjayaḥ) said (uvāca):
Thus (iti), after speaking to Arjuna in this way (arjunam... tathā uktvā), Vāsudeva (vāsudevaḥ) showed (him) --a periphrastic perfect in all its glory-- (darśayāmāsa) once again (bhūyas) His own (svakam) Form (rūpam). And (ca) the High-souled One --Lord Kṛṣṇa-- (mahā-ātmā), after assuming (bhūtvā) once more (punar) (His) placid and auspicious Form (saumya-vapus), comforted/calmed --another periphrastic perfect-- (āśvāsayāmāsa) this terrified (Arjuna) (bhītam enam)||50||
अर्जुन उवाच
दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं तव सौम्यं जनार्दन।
इदानीमस्मि संवृत्तः सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः॥५१॥
Arjuna uvāca
Dṛṣṭvedaṁ mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ tava saumyaṁ janārdana|
Idānīmasmi saṁvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṁ gataḥ||51||
Arjuna (arjunaḥ) said (uvāca):
"After seeing (dṛṣṭvā) this (idam) placid (saumyam) (and) human (mānuṣam) Form (rūpam) of Yours (tava), O You who agitate men (jana-ardana)!, now (idānīm) I have returned to consciousness (asmi saṁvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ) (and) have restored my (normal) awareness (prakṛtim gataḥ)"||51||
श्रीभगवानुवाच
सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम।
देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः॥५२॥
Śrībhagavānuvāca
Sudurdarśamidaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama|
Devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṁ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ||52||
The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):
"You have seen (dṛṣṭavān asi) this (idam) Form (rūpam) of Mine (mama) which (yad) is very difficult to see (su-durdarśam). Even (api) the gods (devāḥ) always (nityam) desire the vision (darśana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ) of this Form (asya rūpasya)"||52||
नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया।
शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं दृष्टवानसि मां यथा॥५३॥
Nāhaṁ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā|
Śakya evaṁvidho draṣṭuṁ dṛṣṭavānasi māṁ yathā||53||
"Just as (yathā) you have seen me (dṛṣṭavān asi mām), I cannot be seen (na aham... śakyaḥ... draṣṭum) in such a manner (evaṁvidhaḥ) neither (na) through the Vedas (vedaiḥ), nor (na) through austerity (tapasā), nor (na) through charity (dānena), nor (na ca) through a sacrifice (ijyayā)"||53||
भक्त्या त्वनन्यया शक्य अहमेवंविधोऽर्जुन।
ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परन्तप॥५४॥
Bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṁvidho'rjuna|
Jñātuṁ draṣṭuṁ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṁ ca parantapa||54||
"But (tu), O Arjuna (arjuna)!, through one-pointed and undivided devotion (bhaktyā... ananyayā) I can truly be known, seen, and entered into (śakyaḥ aham... jñātum draṣṭum ca tattvena praveṣṭum) in such a manner (evaṁvidhaḥ), O destroyer of enemies (parantapa)!"||54||
मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्तः सङ्गवर्जितः।
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः स मामेति पाण्डव॥५५॥
Matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ|
Nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava||55||
"The one (yaḥ sa) who performs actions for Me (mad-karma-kṛt), is dedicated to Me (mad-paramaḥ), (and) is My devotee (mad-bhaktaḥ), devoid of attachment (saṅga-varjitaḥ) (and) free from enmity (nirvairaḥ) toward all beings (sarva-bhūteṣu), passes over to Me (eti) (mām), O descendant of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍava)!"||55||
