 Kuṇḍalinīstavaḥ

Cântico de louvor a Kuṇḍalinī

 Introduction

This is the Kuṇḍalinīstavaḥ that is located within the venerable Rudrayāmalottaratantra. Being within a Tantra, its author is the Lord Himself and not a mere human. The word «stavaḥ» means three things, mainly: Praise, song of praise, or hymn. And «Kuṇḍalinī» is the Śakti or Supreme Power that resides in the body. The awakening of this Power marks the beginning of the true spiritual path. This short hymn is very easy to chant and is usually intoned during the seminars of my spiritual lineage in which Kuṇḍalinī is awakened. It is greatly auspicious and bestows the fruit of Kuṇḍalinī's awakening. I wanted to translate it so that all who read and chant this praise may thus be blessed.

Now read the Kuṇḍalinīstavaḥ and experience Supreme Delight, dear Śiva.

Important: Everything that is within parentheses and in italics in the translation has been added by me to complete the meaning of a given phrase or sentence. Likewise, everything that is between double hyphens (--...--) constitutes additional clarifying information also added by me.

 Kuṇḍalinīstavaḥ

Janmoddhāranirīkṣaṇīha taruṇī vedādibījādimā nityaṁ cetasi bhāvyate bhuvi kadā sadvākyasañcāriṇī|
Māṁ pātu priyadāsabhāvakapadaṁ saṅghātaye śrīdharā dhātri tvaṁ svayamādidevavanitā dīnātidīnaṁ paśum||1||

(Kuṇḍalinī) seeks to extract here --in this world-- (Her devotees) from (the cycle of) births (janma-uddhāra-nirīkṣaṇī iha). (She is) the Taruṇī --lit. a young woman-- (taruṇī) who is primordial in the seed Mantra-s, (as well as) in the Veda-s, etc. (veda-ādi-bīja-ādimā). On Earth (bhuvi), She always presents Herself (nityam... bhāvyate) in the mind (cetasi). Sometimes --I would prefer «kadācid»-- (kadā), She communicates/transmits in the statements of the sages (sat-vākya-sañcāriṇī). May She, the venerable Sustainer, protect me, who am in a condition endowed with the feeling of being (Her) beloved servant (mām pātu priya-dāsa-bhāvaka-padam... śrī-dharā), in order to attain Union --Union with the Supreme Self-- (saṅghātaye)! O Mother (dhātri), You (tvam) Yourself (svayam) (are) the beloved wife of the primordial God (ādi-deva-vanitā)! (May She protect me, who am) a beast --that is, a being in bondage-- (paśum) more wretched than the most wretched (dīna-ati-dīnaṁ)!||1||

Raktābhāmṛtacandrikā lipimayī sarpākṛtirnidritā jāgratkūrmasamāśritā bhagavati tvaṁ māṁ samālokaya|
Māṁsodgandhakugandhadoṣajaḍitaṁ vedādikāryānvitaṁ svalpasvāmalacandrakoṭikiraṇairnityaṁ śarīraṁ kuru||2||

(Kuṇḍalinī) has a red splendor (rakta-ābhā), is the nectarean moonlight (amṛta-candrikā), is replete with letters (lipi-mayī), possesses the form of a serpent (sarpa-ākṛtiḥ), is asleep (nidritā), (and) abides in the Kūrmaprāṇa in wakefulness --the Kūrmaprāṇa produces the blinking-- (jāgrat-kūrma-samāśritā). O Lady (bhagavati), look at me (mām samālokaya)! (My body) has become inert due to the disorders of the three bodily humors, and smells bad due to the odors of flesh (māṁsa-udgandha-kugandha-doṣa-jaḍitam), (but even so) it is linked (to the performance) of Vedic rituals, etc. (veda-ādi-kārya-anvitam). Make (kuru) (this) body (śarīram) eternal (nityam) through a very small portion of your own pure millions of moon-rays (su-alpa-sva-amala-candra-koṭi-kiraṇaiḥ)!||2||

Siddhārthī nijadoṣavitsthalagatirvyājīyate vidyayā kuṇḍalyā kulamārgamuktanagarī māyākumārgaḥ śriyā|
Yadyevaṁ bhajati prabhātasamaye madhyāhnakāle'thavā nityaṁ yaḥ kulakuṇḍalījapapadāmbhojaṁ sa siddho bhavet||3||

--The Sanskrit is extremely convoluted in the first part of this stanza. Perhaps some errors have crept in over the centuries. I translate but must fill in the inconsistencies in the grammatical structure with some imagination. As always, honesty above all--

He who desires to attain perfection --I would expect «siddhyarthī» instead-- (siddha-arthī) (and) knows his own faults (nija-doṣa-vit) becomes victorious --I read, literally, «is conquered»-- (vyājīyate) while moving on the earth --I found no better meaning-- (sthala-gatiḥ) by means of Kuṇḍalī who is Knowledge (vidyayā kuṇḍalyā), (and arrives) at the city of the liberated ones through the path of Kula --of Śakti-- (kula-mārga-mukta-nagarī). The bad path of Māyā (māyā-ku-mārgaḥ) (is removed) by the Venerable and Splendid One --by Kuṇḍalinī-- (śriyā). If (yadi), at dawn (prabhāta-samaye) or (athavā) at noon (madhyāhna-kāle), he worships --that «yaḥ» seems unnecessary-- (bhajati... yaḥ) in this manner (evam) constantly (nityam) the lotus feet of the japa --of the muttering of this hymn-- of Kulakuṇḍalī (kula-kuṇḍalī-japa-pada-ambhojam), he (saḥ... bhavet) becomes successful (siddhaḥ)||3||

Vidyā kuṇḍalamāninī svajananī māyā kriyā bhāvyate yaistaiḥ siddhakulodbhavaiḥ praṇatibhiḥ satstotrakaiḥ śambhubhiḥ||4||

O Most Pure One who uproots the fruits of desires! (ati-vimale vāñchā-phala-unmūlake), (Your) conventional (Form) (saṅketitā) is always contemplated --that is, meditated upon-- (nityam bhāvitā) in the proper manner (samprati) as consisting in an eternal body (nitya-deha-ghaṭitā) (residing) in the (cakra) of four petals --in the Mūlādhāra-- (where dwell) wind and ether (vāyu-ākāśa-catur-dale). (She who is) Knowledge (vidyā), (who is) the most venerable Coiled One (kuṇḍala-māninī), (who is) Her own Mother (sva-jananī), (who is) Māyā (māyā) (and) Kriyā --Activity-- (kriyā), is contemplated (bhāvyate) by those who (yaiḥ taiḥ) (worship Her) through the true hymns of Śambhu --of Śiva-- (sat-stotrakaiḥ śambhubhiḥ) (and also) through prostrations/salutations (praṇatibhiḥ) arising from the community of the Siddha-s --of the perfected beings-- (siddha-kula-udbhavaiḥ) --the Sanskrit here is a bit far-fetched, I must say--||4||

Dhātāśaṅkaramohinī tribhuvanacchāyāpaṭodgāminī saṁsārādimahāsukhapraharaṇī tatra sthitā yoginī|
Sarvagranthivibhedinī svabhujagā sūkṣmātisūkṣmā parā brahmajñānavinodinī kulakuṭī vyāghātinī bhāvyate||5||

Remaining (sthitā) there --in the Mūlādhāra-- (tatra), the Yoginī (yoginī) deludes Śaṅkara and the Creator --Brahmā-- (dhātā-śaṅkara-mohinī), lifts the veil of shadow in the three worlds --in heaven, hell and earth-- (tri-bhuvana-chāyā-paṭa-udgāminī), destroys the great happiness of Saṁsāra --of Transmigration--, etc. (saṁsāra-ādi-mahā-sukha-praharaṇī), pierces all knots (sarva-granthi-vibhedinī), takes the form of a serpent --lit. «is Her own serpent»-- (sva-bhujagā), is subtler than the subtlest (sūkṣma-ati-sūkṣmā), is Supreme (parā), is the One who delights through the Knowledge of Brahma --of the Absolute-- (brahma-jñāna-vinodinī), (and) is conceived (bhāvyate) as having a curved form (kula-kuṭī) that strikes and destroys (ignorance) (vyāghātinī)||5||

Vande śrīkulakuṇḍalīṁ trivalibhiḥ sāṅgaiḥ svayambhūpriyāṁ prāviṣṭāmbaramāracittacapalāṁ bālābalāniṣkalām|
Yā devī paribhāti vedavadanā sambhāvanī tāpinīṣṭānāṁ śirasi svayambhuvanitāṁ sambhāvayāmi kriyām||6||

I pay homage (vande) to the venerable Kulakuṇḍalī (śrī-kula-kuṇḍalīm), to the Beloved of Svayambhū --of the self-existent liṅga around which Kuṇḍalinī dwells coiled in Mūlādhāra-- (svayambhū-priyām) (who surrounds this liṅga) in three folds with (all) the members (of Her retinue) (tri-valibhiḥ sāṅgaiḥ), to Her who moves here and there in the mind (full of) love that has entered the Ether --«praviṣṭa» would be more correct-- (prāviṣṭa-ambara-māra-citta-capalām), to Her who is a girl, weak and without parts (bālā-abalā-niṣkalām). The Goddess (devī) who (yā) shines (paribhāti) as the Face of the Veda-s (veda-vadanā) carries out (all that is necessary) (sambhāvanī) for (Her) beloved ones (iṣṭānām), (and) burns (those who are not) (tāpinī). I honor (sambhāvayāmi) (this Kuṇḍalinī who is) Activity (kriyām) (and also) the Beloved Wife of the Self-Existent One --of Śiva-- (svayambhu-vanitām) on the head (śirasi)||6||

Āṣāḍhodbhavamegharājijanitadhvāntānanā sthāyinī mātā sā paripātu sūkṣmapathagā māṁ yogināṁ śaṅkarī||7||

(Kuṇḍalinī is like) the intoxication (that comes) from the sound of millions of mṛdaṅga-s --a double-headed drum played hanging from the neck by means of a strap-- and voices --the Sanskrit is very convoluted and unclear here-- (vāṇī-koṭi-mṛdaṅga-nāda-madanā). (Kuṇḍalinī emits) millions of sounds that act as a staircase (for ascending to Śiva) --this is what I understand here, and yes, all very far-fetched-- (niśreṇi-koṭi-dhvaniḥ). (She is) the Lady of the vital energy (prāṇa-īśī), (and) has a perfect face endowed with the splendor of a lotus whose root is a mass of elixir (rasa-rāśi-mūla-kamala-ullāsa-eka-pūrṇa-ānanā). (Her) face has the darkness generated by a row of the clouds that arise in Āṣāḍha --a month corresponding to part of June and July-- (āṣāḍha-udbhava-megha-rāji-janita-dhvānta-ānanā). May that sustaining Mother, who travels along the subtle path, protect me (sthāyinī mātā sā paripātu sūkṣma-patha-gā mām)! She is auspicious (śaṅkarī) for the yogī-s (yoginām)||7||

Tvāmāśritya narā vrajanti sahasā vaikuṇṭhakailāsayorānandaikavilāsinīṁ śaśiśatānandānanāṁ kāraṇām|
Mātaḥ śrīkulakuṇḍalīpriyakale kālīkaloddīpane tatsthānaṁ praṇamāmi bhadravanite māmuddhara tvaṁ paśum||8||

After taking refuge (āśritya) in You (tvām), people (narāḥ) go (vrajanti) immediately (sahasā) to Vaikuṇṭha and Kailāsa --the abodes of Viṣṇu and Śiva-- (vaikuṇṭha-kailāsayoḥ). (They resort to You) who only play and move in Bliss (ānanda-eka-vilāsinīm), (to You) who are the Cause (kāraṇām) (and) whose face reveals the Delight of hundreds of moons (śaśi-śata-ānanda-ānanām). O Mother (mātar), O beloved aspect of the venerable Kulakuṇḍalī --«kale» can also be translated as «O digit of the moon»-- (śrī-kula-kuṇḍalī-priya-kale), O You who illuminate the Kālī aspect (kālī-kalā-uddīpane), I bow down (praṇamāmi) to that place --it refers to the Mūlādhāra where Kuṇḍalinī resides-- (tad-sthānam)! O auspicious Lady (bhadra-vanite), elevate/extract me, who am a beast --extract me from the massive ignorance in this world and raise me above it-- (mām uddhara tvam paśum)!||8||

Kuṇḍalīśaktimārgasthaḥ stotrāṣṭakamahāphalam|
Yaḥ paṭhetprātarutthāya sa yogī bhavati dhruvam||9||

He who (yaḥ) remains on the path of Kuṇḍalīśakti (kuṇḍalī-śakti-mārga-stham) (and) recites (paṭhet) (this) hymn that yields great fruit and consists of eight stanzas (stotra-aṣṭaka-mahā-phalam) after rising at dawn (prātar-utthāya), he certainly becomes (saḥ... bhavati) (dhruvam) a yogī (yogī)||9||

Kṣaṇādeva hi pāṭhena kavinātho bhavediha|
Pavitraḥ kuṇḍalīyogī brahmalīno bhavenmahān||10||

Through recitation (pāṭhena), he becomes (bhavet) here (iha) in an instant (kṣaṇāt eva hi) the lord of poets (kavi-nāthaḥ). He who practices the Yoga of Kuṇḍalī (kuṇḍalī-yogī), dissolves into Brahma (brahma-līnaḥ), (and) becomes (bhavet) holy/pure (pavitraḥ) (and) great (mahān)||10||

Iti te kathitaṁ nātha kuṇḍalīkomalaṁ stavam|
Etatstotraprasādena deveṣu gurugīṣpatiḥ||11||

Thus (iti), O Lord! (nātha), the soft and delicate hymn of praise to Kuṇḍalī (kuṇḍalī-komalam stavam) has been uttered (kathitam) to You (te). Through the favor of this hymn (etad-stotra-prasādena), (one becomes) a man endowed with learning like the Guru (guru-gīṣpatiḥ) of the gods (deveṣu)||11||

Sarve devāḥ siddhiyutā asyāḥ stotraprasādataḥ|
Dviparārdhaṁ cirañjīvī brahmā sarvasureśvaraḥ||12||

Through the favor of Her hymn (asyāḥ stotra-prasādatas), all (sarve) the gods (devāḥ) become endowed with supernatural powers (siddhi-yutāḥ). The long-lived (ciran-jīvī) Brahmā (brahmā), the lord of all gods (sarva-sura-īśvaraḥ), (lives for) two parārdha-s --a «parārdha» equals 100,000,000,000,000,000 human years-- (dvi-parārdham)||12||

||Iti rudrayāmalottaratantrāntargataḥ kuṇḍalinīstavaḥ sampūrṇaḥ||

||Thus (iti), the hymn of praise to Kuṇḍalinī (kuṇḍalinī-stavaḥ), which resides within the Rudrayāmalottaratantra (rudrayāmalottara-tantra-antar-gataḥ), is complete (sampūrṇaḥ)||
