 Bhagavadgītā (Bhagavad Gita): Chapter IX (Rājavidyārājaguhyayoga)

The Yoga of Royal Knowledge and Royal Mystery

 Introduction

Arjuna is now taught by Lord Kṛṣṇa about the greatest Knowledge and Mystery...

Important: All that is in brackets and italicized within the translation has been added by me in order to complete the sense of a particular phrase or sentence. In turn, all that is between double hyphen (--...--) constitutes clarifying further information also added by me. In addition, note that I will use quotation marks to delimit text only when the person speaking is not Sañjaya himself (the narrator). Therefore, the words spoken by Sañjaya will not be delimited by quotation marks.

 Chapter 9: Rājavidyārājaguhyayoga (The Yoga of Royal Knowledge and Royal Mystery)

Śrībhagavānuvāca
Idaṁ tu te guhyatamaṁ pravakṣyāmyanasūyave|
Jñānaṁ vijñānasahitaṁ yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt||1||

The venerable Lord (śrī-bhagavān) said (uvāca):

"I will speak to you (te... pravakṣyāmi), who are not envious (anasūyave), about this (idam tu) most secret and mysterious (guhyatamam) knowledge (jñānam) —together with direct knowledge --that is, along with experience-- (vijñāna-sahitam)—, after knowing which (yad-jñātvā) you will be liberated (mokṣyase) from sin --that is, from all that is evil and inauspicious-- (aśubhāt)"||1||

Rājavidyā rājaguhyaṁ pavitramidamuttamam|
Pratyakṣāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ susukhaṁ kartumavyayam||2||

"This (idam) royal knowledge (rāja-vidyā) (is) the royal mystery (rāja-guhyam), the highest (uttamam) means of purification (pavitram), (is) comprehensible and perceptible by direct experience (pratyakṣa-avagamam), legitimate and righteous (dharmyam), very easy (su-sukham) to carry out (kartum), (and) imperishable (avyayam)"||2||

Aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya parantapa|
Aprāpya māṁ nivartante mṛtyusaṁsāravartmani||3||

"O destroyer of enemies (parantapa), the people (puruṣāḥ) who are devoid of faith (aśraddadhānāḥ) in this dharma (dharmasya asya), not attaining Me (aprāpya mām), pass over to (nivartante) the mortal course or path of Transmigration --or "to the course or path of Transmigration (in which there is) death"; an expression that is again very ambiguous-- (mṛtyu-saṁsāra-vartmani)"||3||

Mayā tatamidaṁ sarvaṁ jagadavyaktamūrtinā|
Matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṁ teṣvavasthitaḥ||4||

"All (sarvam) this (idam) universe (jagat) is pervaded --lit. spread-- (tatam) by Me (mayā) through (My) unmanifest form (avyakta-mūrtinā). All created things and beings (sarva-bhūtāni) abide in Me (mad-sthāni), but (ca) I (aham) do not (na) abide (avasthitaḥ) in them (teṣu)"||4||

Na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogamaiśvaram|
Bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ||5||

"But, (even so) (ca), created things and beings (bhūtāni) do not (na) abide in Me (mayi). Behold (paśya) My (me) majestic --this term also means "powerful" and several other things; again the ambiguity-- (aiśvaram) Yoga (yogam)! My (mama) Self (ātmā) bears created things and beings (bhūta-bhṛt) and also creates and unfolds them --lit. "creates and unfolds created things and beings"-- (bhūta-bhāvanaḥ), but (ca) does not (na) abide in them --lit. "does not abide in created things and beings"-- (bhūta-sthaḥ)"||5||

Yathākāśasthito nityaṁ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān|
Tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānītyupadhāraya||6||

"Understand (upadhāraya) that (iti), just as (yathā) the great (mahān) air (vāyuḥ) moving everywhere (sarvatra-gaḥ) always abides in the ether or space (ākāśa-sthitaḥ nityam), similarly (tathā), all (sarvāṇi) created things and beings (bhūtāni) abide in Me (mad-sthāni)"||6||

Sarvabhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṁ yānti māmikām|
Kalpakṣaye punastāni kalpādau visṛjāmyaham||7||

"O son of Kuntī (kaunteya)! At the end of a kalpa --a mahāyuga is 4 yuga-s totaling 4,320,000 human years; well, a kalpa (twelve hours of Brahmā) is one thousand mahāyuga-s, that is 4,320,000,000 human years-- (kalpa-kṣaye), all created things and beings (sarva-bhūtani) go (yānti) to My (māmikām) Prakṛti (prakṛtim). At the beginning of the (next) kalpa (kalpa-ādau), I (aham) manifest them --I emit them-- (tāni... visṛjāmi) again (punar)"||7||

Prakṛtiṁ svāmavaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ|
Bhūtagrāmamimaṁ kṛtsnamavaśaṁ prakṛtervaśāt||8||

"By the help of --or 'resting upon', or 'seizing hold of'-- (avaṣṭabhya) My own Prakṛti (prakṛtim svām), I manifest --or 'emit'-- (visṛjāmi) again and again (punar punar) this (imam) entire (kṛtsnam) multitude of created things and beings (bhūta-grāmam), which is powerless (avaśam) by reason of (vaśāt) (this very) Prakṛti (prakṛteḥ)"||8||

Na ca māṁ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya|
Udāsīnavadāsīnamasaktaṁ teṣu karmasu||9||

"O conqueror of wealth (dhanañjaya)! And (ca) those (tāni) actions (karmāṇi) do not (na) bind Me (mām nibadhnanti), (for) I remain seated (āsīnam), as if indifferent (udāsīna-vat), (and) I am not attached (asaktam) to those actions (teṣu karmasu)"||9||

Mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram|
Hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate||10||

"By Me (mayā) as the Supervisor (adhyakṣeṇa), Prakṛti (prakṛtiḥ) begets (sūyate) all that moves and all that does not move (sacarācaram). Due to this cause (hetunā anena), O son of Kuntī (kaunteya)!, the world (jagat) revolves (viparivartate)"||10||

Avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā mānuṣīṁ tanumāśritam|
Paraṁ bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram||11||

"Not knowing (ajānantaḥ) My (mama) Supreme (param) Condition (bhāvam) as the Great Lord of created things and beings (bhūta-mahā-īśvaram), the deluded --lit. "those who are under the power of Moha or Māyā"-- (mūḍhāḥ) despise Me (avajānanti mām) when I assume a human body (mānuṣīm tanum āśritam)"||11||

Moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ|
Rākṣasīmāsurīṁ caiva prakṛtiṁ mohinīṁ śritāḥ||12||

"With vain hopes (mogha-āśāḥ), with vain actions (mogha-karmāṇaḥ), with vain knowledge (mogha-jñānāḥ) (and) stupid --or also 'confused, perplexed'-- (vicetasaḥ), they connect with --or even 'assume'-- (śritāḥ) the delusive nature (prakṛtim mohinīm) of rakṣa-s and asura-s --of demons-- (rākṣasīm āsurīm ca eva)"||12||

Bhajantyananyamanaso jñātvā bhūtādimavyayam||13||

"But (tu) the Great Souls (mahā-ātmānaḥ), O son of Pṛthā (pārtha)!, connecting with --or 'assuming'-- (āśritāḥ) the divine nature (daivīm prakṛtim), (and) knowing Me (mām... jñātvā) as the imperishable and primordial (Self) of (all) created things and (all) beings (bhūta-ādim avyayam), worship Me (mām... bhajanti) with a one-pointed mind (ananya-manasaḥ)"||13||

Mantro'hamahamevājyamahamagnirahaṁ hutam||16||

"I (aham) (am) the kratu --this term is very ambiguous, primarily it means "sacrifice" or "ritual ceremony", but it would be redundant, since Lord Kṛṣṇa mentions the "yajña" later; other possible translations are "offering" and "worship"-- (kratuḥ), I (aham) (am) the sacrifice (yajñaḥ), I (aham) (am) the svadhā --the oblation offered, or also the exclamation or blessing that substitutes for said oblation-- (svadhā), I (aham) (am) the (medicinal) herb (auṣadham), I (aham) (am) the Mantra (mantraḥ), I Myself (aham eva) (am) the clarified butter (ājyam), I (aham) (am) the fire (agniḥ), (and) I (aham) (am) the offering (hutam)"||16||
